چکیده

The work presented in this paper was undertaken as part of BIOCOMP (2005-2008), a European collaborative project, which developed new classes of engineering composite materials from renewable resources. Comprising twenty five European SMEs and research organisations, this three and a half year project generated a wide range of new biocomposite materials, knowledge-based processes and demonstrator components. This study focused on furan thermosetting bioresins, which are made from agricultural waste products such as sugar cane bagasse. Preliminary work included developing a two-part resin and catalyst furan system suitable for hand lay-up with glass fibres. The incorporation of flax fibres into the furan system required significant modifications to the resin chemistry. A high-performance, furan-flax prepreg system was developed, resulting in biocomposites with comparable mechanical properties to conventional glass fibre composites. A number of demonstrator parts were produced for comparison with components currently manufactured using conventional materials.

New biocomposites based on bioplastic flax fibers and biodegradable polymers.

A new generation of entirely biodegradable and bioactive composites with polylactic acid (PLA) or poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) as the matrix and bioplastic flax fibers as reinforcement were analyzed. Bioplastic fibers contain polyhydroxybutyrate and were obtained from transgenic flax. Biochemical analysis of fibers revealed presence of several antioxidative compounds of hydrophilic (phenolics) and...

The influence of biocomposites containing genetically modified flax fibers on gene expression in rat skeletal muscle.

In many studies, natural flax fibers have been proven to be resistant and surgically suitable. Genetically modified flax fibers, derived from transgenic flax expressing three bacterial genes for the synthesis of poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB), have better mechanical properties than unmodified flax fibers. The aim of this study was to examine the biocompatibility of composites containing flax ...

High Strength, High Toughness Polyhydroxybutyrate-Co-Valerate Based Biocomposites

Biocomposites is a field that has gained much scientific attention due to the current substantial consumption of nonrenewable resources and the environmentally harmful disposal methods required for traditional polymer composites. Research on natural fiber reinforced polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) has gained considerable momentum over the past decade. There is little work on PHAs reinforced with u...

Creep Behavior of Poly(lactic acid) Based Biocomposites

Polymer composites containing natural fibers are receiving growing attention as possible alternatives for composites containing synthetic fibers. The use of biodegradable matrices obtained from renewable sources in replacement for synthetic ones is also increasing. However, only limited information is available about the creep behavior of the obtained composites. In this work, the tensile creep...

Biocomposites were prepared by the addition of flax fiber processing waste to glycerol and adipic acid mixtures. The processing waste consisted of fiber, cuticle, and shive fragments generated during the commercial cleaning of retted flax bast fibers. These waste materials were added at 1, 3, or 5 wt% levels to polymer formulations containing either 10% or 20% molar excess acid. The solids were...
